A family-run resort on a remote lake in Georgia has amped up its design factor with a dramatic jazz club. Conceived by the resort’s owner, the late Goga Maisuradze, the Lopota Jazz Club curls around a natural plot in the Kakheti Region of Eastern Georgia, with the Caucasus mountains in the background. Maisuradze hired David Koiava of Tbilisi practice Design Avenue to envision the louvred exterior on a round concrete foundation. Maisuradze’s daughter, the winemaker Ana Maisuradze, has stepped in to launch the club.
Locally sourced timber beams define the louvred exterior. They’re interspersed with live trees around a large, low-lit atrium in natural stone. The interior has the same warm, woody palette. Scattered in the midst of a glossy black bar are furnishings and fixtures from Pianca and Pedrali. Banquette seating raised on platforms around the perimeter is swathed in rich Pierre Frey fabric and lit by copper pendant lamps.
The team invested in world-leading acoustics from Finnish manufacturer Akukon, ensuring the space gets the attention it deserves from guests and potential performers.
